Simple Ideas to Light up your Deck

you have built yourself an amazing, beautiful deck or patio, and with Summer just around the corner now is the perfect time to make sure you have the correct lighting installed.

Here are some ideas to help you use your deck even when the sun goes down.

1. Light up your steps – Placing lights on your steps or stairs is not only visually enhancing but it is also an added safety feature. Step lighting is designed for high traffic areas, and can be recessed into your step or deck, because of its slim line design.

 

2. String Lighting – String lights can create a beautiful soft romantic glow over your deck, there are many different styles, and can be perfect if your deck doesn’t have a roof. They are easy to install yourself and can be updated and changed quite easily.

 

3. Under Counter Lighting – If you have a fixed BBQ or outdoor kitchen then under cabinet lighting should be positioned downwards to get the best angle and can be extremely visually appealing.

 

 

4. Recessed Lighting – Recessed deck lighting is a great way to transform your deck and make it fully functional all night. They are perfect around the edge of your deck to create a border and create a unique look. If you combine these with the step lighting your will create a very safe and useable deck.

 

 

5. Spotlight or Task Lighting – Overhead lighting is great for a specific task, placing a fixture above the outdoor kitchen will ensure that ample light is provided for cooking once the sun goes down. Spotlights are great for directing on a wall or illuminating a specific feature or wall decoration.

 

 

6. Fans with Lights – If you have a roof over your deck then bringing in a device that can eliminate those hot summer days is a must! A fan with a light is the perfect solution. There are fans that are wet rated and fully IP rated. All fans within the outdoor category are suitable for installation in an area that has undercover protection. Fans with a higher rating may be able to be exposed to the elements. There are many sizes, styles and colours to choose from for your alfresco decking area.

 

 

7. Lanterns – Whether they are candle lit, solar or electrical, lanterns are a visually appealing light source, they come in various styles, to suit any décor. Candle lit lanterns are especially good as the centre piece to your outdoor table, whereas electrical or solar can be placed on the top of bollards or railings to create a grandness and a luxurious welcoming feeling to your outdoor living space

 

 

8. Solar lights – Solar powered lighting fixtures provide illumination, safety and security for your decking, patio or pool areas. Solar lights can be easy to install and are available in variety of styles, colours and designs which can be easily installed yourself.

 

 

9. Feature Lights – To create a focal point or feature on your deck installing a light above some wall art or plant is a quick and simple option. Choose from a downlight or uplight, solar or mains powered for your feature light.

 

 

10. Outdoor Heating – Whilst we have Summer covered with a fan, if you are planning your lighting requirements perhaps this would be a good time think about a heater for Winter, so your deck can be enjoyed all year round. Create a cosy warm atmosphere in any outdoor living space with an energy efficient electrical heater, these can be fitted on the walls or ceilings. Most come with an AC plug and are relatively easy to install yourself.
