8 Good Reasons to Consider Smart Lighting your Home

Home automation is an ever changing landscape, and as our homes and lives become more automated through the inclusion of smart technologies, lighting is not immune to this evolution.

The question remains though, is smart lighting something we really need?  Or, if not need, at least can provide some benefit?

Here, we explore some of the benefits of smart lighting, and why we believe, smart lighting will become commonplace in most Australian homes in the very near future.

What is smart lighting?

Smart lights have a chip in them that enables them to “talk” to other devices wirelessly.  Whether this communication be via an app on your phone, a smart home assistant, or other smart accessory, it enables you to control your lighting remotely, without getting up from the couch, or the bed!

Smart lighting allows you to control your lighting remotely.

How are smart lights controlled?

There are several different ways you can control your smart lighting remotely.

  • Bluetooth works by sending a wireless message via radio frequency signals between your smart phone and your smart lighting.  The downside to Bluetooth is that it is only able to be used within reasonably close proximity, so perfect for when you are at home, but not ideal if you want to control your smart lighting when outside the home.
  • Wi-Fi, like Bluetooth, utilises the Wi-Fi signal for communication.  And, like Bluetooth, it is proximity limited to a Wi-Fi signal, whether this be at home, or away from the home.
  • A smart hub is a type of gateway that processes and sends messages between your device and your smart lighting.  Some of the advantages of using a hub include the ability to connect many smart lights, to set lighting automations, to sync lighting with the TV and music, and easily integrate voice control.  While most of these can also be done via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, a hub can simplify these processes.

What are some of the benefits of smart lighting technology?

Convenience

The ability to manage your lighting remotely, is probably the most significant advantage to smart lighting.  For many of us, this means not having to get up from the couch, or get out of bed to turn off a forgotten light, or to dim the lights, or even to change the colour of lights!  On the flip side, it can also mean not having to walk down dark hallways on our way to bed, or find a switch in the dark.

Biggest advantage to smart lighting is the convenience of controlling lighting from wherever you are!

Automations

Who doesn’t love a good schedule?! Smart lighting will allow you to schedule a whole host of lighting options, including scheduling your lights to turn on or off at certain times, to dim or brighten with daylight hours, or even set daily schedules that work in with your work and home life schedule.  The options really are endless.

Security

This is where automations really come into their own, and on a number of levels.  In it’s simplest form, smart lighting offers greater safety and security as you move around your home, simply by having the ability to turn lights on as you go, rather than stumbling through the dark to find the switch.  This is particularly useful outside where paths, steps, gardens, driveways, all need the added element of safety that light brings.

Smart lighting also offers a unique security element when you are away from your home.  Automations can be set to cycle your lights on an off, so as to appear as if you’re home; or they can be set to turn on and off with daylight/night time hours.  And, even if your system doesn’t have the capacity to automate a lighting schedule, the ability to turn your lights on and off remotely from whenever you are can still offer a valuable security element.

On an even simpler scale, smart lighting offers ease of use for popular forms of security lighting.  Sensor lights, for instance, can be controlled from your armchair.  No more climbing up ladders to manually set sensor lights!

Smart lighting makes lighting for security and safety easy.

Energy Saving

Smart lights really can save you energy, and in turn money!  By being able to automate and remotely control what lights you have on, for how long they are on, at what brightness they are set, and how they interact with other lighting options in your home, really can save you energy by simply only using what you need.

Smart lighting options also use LED technology, which in itself can save up to 70% on energy use compared to traditional incandescent globes.

Flexible Colour Choice

Why is LED the go to choice for smart lighting?  LED lights don’t typically heat up, so won’t damage the “smart” chip, but they are also capable of a huge range of choice in terms of lumen output and brightness.  During daylight hours, choose cooler white for completing tasks, and then switch to warmer whites as night sets in to help you relax.

Or, to really experience the full function of smart lights, LED options can offer a greater flexibility in the colour of your light.  Add a little red, turn the kids room green, or add a blue hue to your space, the choices are almost endless.  It’s so easy to have a bit of fun or add a little atmosphere when smart lighting offers this at your fingertips!

Voice Control

Voice control is becoming increasingly common place in Australian households.  Many smart lighting options integrate with voice control platforms to make all the features of your lighting scheme even easier to access.

Stylish

Smart lights can add plenty of aesthetic appeal to your home.  Set custom lighting plans to highlight features, to set moods, to backlight areas where safety is key, such as staircases, or even to turn rooms into practical spaces, or cosy havens.

Functional

Other than being enormously convenient, smart lights will, in most cases, be simple to set up, which makes them an appealing addition.

They will also integrate well with other smart technology you may already have in your home, such as Alexa or Google Home, so a change to smart lighting can be a simple addition to your existing smart technology.

Integrate smart lighting with other smart technology in your home

Are there any disadvantages to smart lighting?

There can be some disadvantages to introducing smart lighting in your home.

  • Smart lighting options tend to be more expensive than regular LED lighting, but as smart lighting becomes more commonplace we are slowly seeing this cost gap bridged.
  • Most systems require a steady Wi-Fi connection
  • Smart lighting systems do rely on technology, and the more technology you add to a product, the more chances something can go wrong.

Before taking the leap into smart lighting, it’s important to speak to a smart lighting expert about your needs.  You might start with some simple changes, like introducing smart globes, or want to dive right in and create an integrated smart home.  Whatever your smart lighting needs, one of the lighting experts at Rovert Lighting & Electrical can point you in the right direction.
